Colonial Beginnings: The Roots of the dark side of the global food industry Inequities – from the latter part of the 15th century, as European colonial powers expanded their territories, many traditional socio-economic systems in the annexed regions were dismantled in favor of structures that primarily served the European settlers or their commercial ventures. This prolonged dominance over the southern regions, combined with the move to privatize formerly shared resources and the breakdown of communal setups even within Europe, facilitated the economic, militaristic, and political ascendance of European nations. This laid the groundwork for European industrialization and the widespread adoption of European capitalist ideals.
