On September 24, President Emmanuel Macron of France confirmed that French soldiers will be withdrawn from Niger by the end of the year. This move came in response to a July coup in the West African nation. The announcement comes as a blow to French military influence in the Sahel, but Macron emphasized that France would not be “held hostage by the putchists”.
