As the price of gold climbs, so does the drive to dig it out of the earth, often with little regard for what (or who) lies in the way. Indigenous lands around the world have become prime targets for mining companies looking to capitalize on high demand, leaving communities struggling to protect not just their homes but their cultural heritage and way of life. For these communities, land is sacred—it’s the heart of their identity, the backbone of their traditions, and often their primary source of livelihood. But as miners come in with bulldozers and chemical processing, these landscapes are transformed, sometimes permanently, and not in ways that benefit the people who live there.
